大学生の24%が「平均」の意味を正しく理解していない(You do not understand properly the meaning of the "average" 24% of the students)

大学生の24%が「平均」の意味を正しく理解していないなど、基礎的な数学力、論理力に大きな課題があることが、日本数学会が実施した初の「大学生数学基本調査」で明らかになった。
 理系学生やセンター入試で数学を受験した大学生も多数含まれており、入試のあり方も問われそうだ。
 調査は昨年4月から7月にかけ、国公立大から私立大まで48大学で実施。主に入学直後の学生5934人が協力した。調査では小中学校で学ぶ内容を中心に、論理的な文章の読解や記述力、基本的な作図力を問う5問が出題された。
 その結果、全問正答した学生は、わずか1・2%だった。「偶数と奇数を足すとなぜ奇数になるか」を論理的に説明させる中3レベルの問題の正答率は19・1%。小6で学ぶ「平均」についても、求め方は分かるが、「平均より身長が高い生徒と低い生徒は同じ数いる」などの正誤については誤答が目立ち、中堅私大では半数が誤答だった。
問題は、 「100人の平均身長が163.5センチ」の場合、(1)163.5センチより高い人と低い人はそれぞれ50人ずついる(2)全員の身長を足すと1万 6350センチになる(3)10センチごとに区分けすると160センチ以上170センチ未満の人が最も多い――のそれぞれが正しいかどうかを聞いた。正解 は(1)は×、(2)は○、(3)は×だが、全問正答率は76%にとどまった。
 秋入学云々を議論する前に、初等教育を見直し改善していくことが重要な気がしますね。こんな学生が全入時代で大学に入っていくわけですから大学の質は低下せざるをえないでしょうね。外的な入学月を変えようが本質的に何も変わらないでしょうね。
