高齢者が短時間の運動をすると、右脳の特定の領域が活発に働き、判断力を担う左脳の機能を補うことを、筑波大と自治医科大の研究チームが突き止めた。衰えた脳の「代償機能」が運動によって高まる仕組みを世界で初めて解明したという。成果は米科学誌「ニューロバイオロジー・オブ・エイジング」に掲載された。
征矢(そや)筑波大教授(運動生化学)らのチームは、筑波大の学生・院生20人(平均21・5歳)▽茨城県つくば市在住の健康な高齢者16人(同69・3歳)の2班を編成。「あお」など文字の色と意味が一致しているかどうかを判断するテストを解かせ、正答率や判断にかかる時間を集計。さらにテストの後10分間自転車をこぎ、15分間休んで同じテストに再挑戦。脳のどの部位が活発化するかを調べた。
学生班は運動後のテストでは、判断速度が平均50%速くなり、左脳の一部が活発化していたのに対し、高齢者班は、右脳にある「右前頭極」が運動前に比べて活発化し、速度は平均16%向上した。判断力は左脳の一部が担うことから、チームは、高齢者では加齢による脳の機能低下を、別の場所が働くことで補っていると結論付けた。
運動強度は、最大酸素摂取量の半分にあたる「中程度」。習慣的な運動が認知機能を高めることは知られているが、一過性の運動が直接、脳に作用するメカニズムはよく分かっていなかったという。
多くの方々は年ほどの闘病生活をおくって死亡する例が多いとも聞きます。「ぴんぴんころり」が理想です。体のためにも脳のためにも体を動かすことが重要そうですね。せっせと動けるうちは動きましょう!!
