天野教授（Professor Amano）

天皇陛下の手術チームに加わった順天堂大の天野教授は、昭和５８年に日大医学部を卒業後、各病院を渡り歩いて“武者修行”を重ね、国内外の評価を獲得してきた。東大医学部が中心となってきた陛下の医療体制の下では異例の起用。
「天野君は誰よりも向上心が強かった」と話すのは、平成３年に新東京病院（千葉県松戸市）で天野氏を指導した須磨医師。イタリアで学んだバイパス手術の技術を天野氏に一対一で伝授したが、「手術回数を重ねるうちにみるみる上達した。乾いたスポンジが水を吸うようだった」と振り返る。
天野氏は平成１４年に実力を買われて順天堂大医学部教授に就任。１８～２２年の５年間で約３０００件の手術を手がけ、世界最高水準の医師が集まる米国胸部外科学会（ＳＴＳ）の正会員にもなった。
医師仲間の評価は「情熱があり、粘り強い男」。須磨氏は「患者のためにいつも病院に泊まり込んでいた。情熱を持って治療に当たる医師だ」と話す。
大学の同級生で春日部市立病院（埼玉県）の有馬医師は、在学時にテニス部に所属していた天野氏の「相手がミスをするまでいつまでもボールを返す」プレースタイルが強く印象に残っていると話す。「彼は手術が必要な患者がいたら、真夜中であろうとすべて受け入れる。テニスでのしぶとさは、患者のためできることをするという彼の姿勢に通じていると思う」と話している。
また、心臓外科医を主人公にした映画「チーム・バチスタの栄光」やテレビドラマで医療監修・指導を手がける多才な一面もある。
