室蘭・海星学院高校のスプリングイングリッシュキャンプが２７～２９日の３日間、同校で開かれた。春休みを利用して参加した生徒たちは日本語を使わない英語漬けの授業でコミュニケーション力を養った。
英語教育に力を入れる同校の初の試み。英語の専任教員で、アメリカ出身のマット・ベンスコーターさんとカナダ出身のジャック・ブロドゥスキーさんが、英語の読み書きや聞き取り、会話の仕方などをアドバイスした。
１、２年生９人が受講を希望し、毎日午前９時～午後２時半まで取り組んだ。日本語を使うのは禁止だが、うっかり「ありがとう」「ごめん」と口に出てしまうことも。そんな時は「イエローカード」と冗談で和んだ。
最終日の２９日は、プレゼンテーションや外国人ならではのリアクションの練習、英語のレシピを基にしたお菓子作りを行った。最後に１人ずつ修了証書が授与され、「おめでとう」「頑張ったね」と握手を交わしていた。
１年生の生徒さんは昨年１１月に１カ月間、オーストラリアで語学研修を行い「感覚を取り戻したい」と参加。「みんなで楽しく学び合いながら向上できたと思う」と笑顔。両教員も「恥ずかしがることなく積極的な姿勢がみられた。英語の楽しさを実感し、自信がついたのでは」と生徒たちを評価した。
日本でも、常に英語を使わなければ環境が用意されていれば結構上達するのかもしれませんね。ともかく道具ですから使うことでしょうね。
