歴代正室は逆三角形型（Successive heir inverted triangle type）

東京・上野の寛永寺にある徳川家墓所の改葬に伴う発掘調査で、把握できた歴代正室の顔は全て細長く、顎が小さい逆三角形型だったことがわかった。
　出身の皇室や貴族の特徴とみられる。貴族以外からこし入れした側室にも同じ傾向があり、当時の「美人顔」として好まれたとみられる。
　徳川家墓所は、同寺と東京・芝の増上寺の両菩提(ぼだい)寺に造営されている。寛永寺での調査は２００７～０８年に行われ、９代家重、１０代家治(いえはる)、１２代家慶(いえよし)、１３代家定の正室４人と、６代家宣(いえのぶ)から１２代までの間の側室８人、生母２人、娘１人の計１５人の頭骨を測定した。
　正室の頭骨のサイズは江戸庶民や現代の女性とほぼ同じだが、〈１〉逆三角形型〈２〉顔が細長い〈３〉鼻筋が狭く高いなどの「貴族的特徴」があった。増上寺の徳川家墓所調査（１９５８～６０年）の報告書でも、６代、１１代家斉(いえなり)、１３代、１４代家茂(いえもち)の正室４人が同じ特徴だった。
　側室も、両寺の調査結果を合わせた１２人のうち７人にこの特徴があった。残りの５人は、顎がしっかりした当時の江戸庶民に近かった。
　将軍も、当時でいう美人の正室を望んだ結果の現れなんでしょうね。
