海洋研究開発機構は２７日、東日本大震災の発生メカニズムを解明するため宮城県沖の海底を掘削していた地球探査船「ちきゅう」のドリルが、海面からの深さで７７４０メートルまで達し、海底の調査掘削の世界記録を更新したと発表した。
　ちきゅうは、４月から宮城県の牡鹿半島沖合で調査を開始。水深６８８３・５メートルの海底までドリルを下ろし、その下８５６・５メートルまで掘削。海面からの深さは７７４０メートルとなった。
　これまでは、１９７８年に米国の探査船による、マリアナ海溝チャレンジャー海淵での７０４９・５メートルが最高だった。地震の発生メカニズムの究明と同時に、様々な海洋資源の調査探求にも力を発揮しそうですね。
