新研究棟は杉本キャンパス（大阪市住吉区）に構える。３階建てで、延べ床面積は約1500平方メートル。たんぱく質の構造を解析する最先端の分析装置や、入居する企業用の実験室などを備える。建設費は８億8000万円で大阪市が全額負担する。
大阪市立大は年3000万円程度の研究費を拠出する企業と「共同研究講座」をつくり、企業の研究者を教授もしくは准教授として迎える方針。
パナソニックや日立造船などが参加する方向で検討している。さらに会員制の「人工光合成フォーラム」（仮称）も組織し、講演会の開催や関連情報の交換など
の活動にも取り組む計画だ。
人工光合成は、水と二酸化炭素を原料に太陽光を使ってメタノールなど有機化合物系の燃料を作る技術。将来のエネルギー源として世界各地で研究が進められているものの反応効率の高い触媒の開発が課題となっている。
大阪市立大は光合成を担う植物のたんぱく質の構造を解明する研究で優れた実績を持つ。関連する研究者も数多く抱えており、産学連携拠点を構えれば、さらなる成果が期待できると考えた。産学連携して生産技術はもちろん実用化にまで早い時期にこぎつけて欲しいですね。
