チーム等々力（Todoroki team）

「うちの寺にも置きたいんですが」。川崎市中原区等々力のプレス加工業堀端の工場は昨年、暮れまで電話が鳴りっぱなしだ。
昨年１０月、明治大学と町工場仲間ら５人と開発した免震台座を川崎区内の寺「円能院」に納入した直後からだ。テレビで放映され、電話は１日１７件もかかってきた。
パート社員２人を含めて５人の零細企業。「機械に向き合う暇もありませんでしたよ」と苦笑する。
父が創業した町工場の２代目。扇風機、テレビ、ラジオ……。働きはじめた４３年前は、様々な家電製品の部品の注文が舞い込んだ。受注をこなすのに、寝る間もなく働いた。
しかし、バブル崩壊前後から取引先から値下げを迫られ、利益を出すのが厳しくなった。人件費の安い中国へと発注先を変えられ、受注は激減した。
もともと引っ込み思案のうえに工場で機械に向き合ってばかりの生活。「たまに話すのは得意様の取引先だけ。視野が狭くなる一方だった」。これではいけないと、異業種交流会に参加して人前で話す機会をつくろうと心がけた。
「もっと情報発信しようよ」。２００６年、同じような悩みを抱える町工場の仲間に声をかけ、中小企業の見本市に出品した。たまたまその場で名刺交換した明大職員との縁で、翌０７年、当時理工学部の教授だった大亦さんとの接点が生まれた。大亦さんは免震構造の台座を構想していたが、製品化できる技術がない。堀端をリーダーとする町工場５社と設計事務所１社による「チーム等々力」と明大の共同開発が始まった。
堀端は、研究室で学生が制作したサンプルを手にして直感した。「ねじが多すぎる。組み木状にすれば、見た目もすっきりするし、修理も楽だ」。長年の経験ですぐ改善点を見抜いた。
しかし、地震の知識は全くない。休日、仲間たちと大亦の研究室に通って地震動の講義を受け、半年がかりで１号機を完成させた。
バネと金属部品を使って揺れを吸収する。１号機は、短い周期の震動には対応するが、ゆっくり長い周期には耐えられなかった。大亦さんから「このタイプで、長周期地震動に耐えうる台座は日本にない」と聞き、やる気に火がついた。
０８年から再び開発に取り組んだ。チームの旋盤工、佐藤さんの熟練の技で、長い揺れを吸収する部品をつくり、１０年１月に新しい台座を完成させた。
震災後の問い合わせは約６０件。納入実績は２件だが、国の重要文化財がある寺からも声がかかる。新製品を共同開発したいという業者が、岡山から見学に来る予定もある。
「まねされると困るからまだ言えませんけど、新製品のアイデアもあるんですよ」。堀端のとつとつとした口調には、自信がにじんでいた。日本の企業のほとんどは中小零細ですから、この様な企業が力を合わせて独創的な仕事をして下から日本経済を支えていって欲しいですね。
