「日本語の講座を受講したいと相談に来る学生が目に見えて減った。幾つかの講座は閉講寸前」
　ここ数年、韓国の外国語スクールや大学などで学生の「日本語離れ」が進んでいる。ソウル市内の大手スクールでは日本語講座の受講生が15－20％減るなど、英語や中国語といったほかの外国語に押されている状況。特に、昨年3月の東日本巨大地震と福島第1原子力発電所の事故が、こうした傾向にさらに拍車を掛けた。
　ソウル市鍾路区のパゴダ外国語学院では、2007年から日本語講座の受講生が減少を続けている。同学院の関係者は韓流ブームで多くの日本人が韓国を訪れた03－06年には受講生が増えたが、07年以降は減り続けている。
　他の外国語スクールも状況は同じだ。鍾路留学院・日本留学相談センターの課長は「4－5年前までは、日本語講座の受講生が教室を埋め尽くしていたが、今は1クラス3－4人ほどだ。留学相談に来る学生も減り続けており、コンサルティングを続けていくべきかどうか疑問だ」と語った。
　日本語能力試験（JLPT）を主管する日本国際交流基金によると、JLPTの受験者は09年には約16万9000人に達したが、10年は13万413人、11年は約11万人（推定）と減少を続けている。
　大学の入試や講座を見ても、日本語への関心の低下がうかがえる。第2外国語の履修を卒業の条件にしている高麗大は、日本語科目の受講生が04年の1090人から減少を続け、昨年には580人となった。8年間で半数近くに減ったことになる。高麗大日語日文学科の金教授は「中国が台頭し、日本が停滞している中、日本語への関心が低くなっているようだ」と話している。こんな所にも日本の衰退の状況が見えてきそうですね。
