乃木希典の直筆の手紙（Nogi autograph letter ）

日露戦争の陸軍司令官、乃木希典の直筆の手紙が札幌市内で見つかった。戦争で跡継ぎをなくし、知人から養子を勧められていた乃木だが、多くの兵士を死なせた自責の念から、養子縁組せずに乃木家を断絶させる覚悟をつづっている。
　手紙は1910年７月６日の消印で、学習院院長をしていた乃木が広島市の修道中学校校主の佐藤正宛てに送ったもの。
　乃木は日露戦争で中国の旅順攻略を指揮した際、約６万人の戦死傷者を出し、息子２人も失った。手紙には、多くの兵士を死なせ天皇陛下や遺族に申し訳なく、跡継ぎのための養子は考えておらず「小生共一代」で終わると記述。息子の戦死で「面目を保った」との思いも明かしている。
　1935年ごろ巻物に仕立てられた際に、旅順攻略で参謀中佐として乃木に従った伊豆凡夫や、体験を基に旅順戦を描いた「肉弾」の著者、桜井忠温らが、直筆だと証明する署名を添えている。
　評伝「乃木希典」の著書がある大浜徹也筑波大名誉教授は「乃木の抱えた重荷や、日露戦争後も遺族に寄り添って生きようとした思いが伝わる」と話している。NHKで放送された司馬遼太郎の「坂の上の雲」にも描かれていましたが、評価が分かれる人物です。組織的に考えると二の位置が重要ですね。トップは極端に言えば、能力がなくても二の位置に立つ人物がしっかりしていればいいんです。その意味で支える人物に恵まれなかった方なんでしょうね。その心労ははかりしれないものがあると思いますね。
