　北海道の阿寒国立公園にある国の天然記念物「オンネトー湯の滝」（足寄町）の池で、外来の熱帯魚グッピーやティラピアが大量に繁殖し、環境省が今冬、根絶に乗り出す。
　湯の滝一帯は、二酸化マンガンの生成を直接観察できる世界的にも珍しい場所だが、外来魚が藻類を食い荒らし、生成が少なくなっている。
　環境省によると、何者かが池に放して繁殖したとみられ、２０センチ弱ほどのティラピアと、メダカよりひと回り大きいグッピーが数千匹いるという。湯の滝は温泉で冬でも水温が２０度近くに保たれるため死なない。
　二酸化マンガンの生成には水中の微生物が作用している。微生物には、藻類が作り出す酸素が不可欠だが、外来魚が藻類を食べ、二酸化マンガンの生成が極端に減っている。足寄町は１９９９年から毎秋、ポンプで池の水をくみ出し、数千匹の外来魚を網で捕獲してきたが、完全には捕りきれず、再び繁殖していた。
　どんな理由にせよ、外来生物を放すことは許せないですね。本来の生態系を破壊してしまう可能性も大いにありますね。他の生物のためにも根絶するしか道はないように感じますね。
