　ヒッグス博士は「南部陽一郎博士の研究から大きな影響を受けた」と明かした。
　ヒッグス博士は１９６４年、物に質量を与えるヒッグス粒子の存在を予測し、今回の受賞が決まった。その基礎になる理論を提唱したのが、米シカゴ大名誉教授で、２００８年の同賞受賞者の南部博士だ。ヒッグス博士は「１９６０年に研究の方向を見失っていたとき、南部博士の論文に興味をかきたてられた。彼の足跡をたどり、彼の理論で欠けていた要素を提供した」と語った。
　南部陽一郎博士の研究から大きな影響を受けたとは聞いていましたが、ご本人の口から明確にお聞きすると現代物理学の最先端の理論や実験の南部博士の研究が影響を与え実験を通じて、それが明確になったというのは日本人として誇らしいですね。
