　Google Chrome 担当エンジニアリングディレクターである Mark Larson 氏は、同社の公式 Blog で XP 版 Chrome のサポート延長について次のように説明した。
　「パッチが適用されていない Web ブラウザは、コンピューターにマルウェアを感染させるために利用されることが多い。Google は Windows XP 上で動作する Chrome のサポートを延長し、定期的なアップデートとセキュリティーパッチを、少なくとも2015年4月までは提供すると決定した。Google は、何億もの人々がまだ Windows XP を利用しており、その中にはかなりの数の Chrome ユーザーが含まれていることを認識している。また、多くの組織がいまだに Windows XP で動作する数十もの、場合によっては数百ものアプリケーションを利用しており、移行が困難であることも認識している。
　Google の目指すところは、この移行期間中、XP 版 Chrome のユーザーをサポートすることだ。XP 版 Chrome にはこれまで同様自動アップデートが適用され、利用者はマルウェアやフィッシング攻撃から保護される」
　XP 版 Chrome のサポートを延長することで、Google Chrome にはビジネスユーザーが増加すると考えられる。中小企業においては、Microsoft が XP のサポートを打ち切った後の移行計画がまだ立っていないところが多いためだ。
　Google は2013年4月、企業ユーザーが Internet Explorer の使用を継続する場合のオプションとして、「レガシーブラウザサポート」の提供を発表した。これは、必要に応じて Chrome と IE を自動的に使い分け可能にする機能だ。この機能を利用すれば、通常は最新の Chrome ブラウザを利用し、最新のブラウザ上では動作しない、以前のバージョンのブラウザ向けに開発されたカスタムアプリを実行する際には、そのアプリにあったバージョンの Internet Explorer が自動的に起動するように設定できる。
　XPからの移行が難しい自治体なども多くあると聞きます。Googleがサポート体制を組んで、これまでと同様の自動アップデートが適用されるようになることはXPユーザーにとって朗報になりそうですね。
