発表が遅れていたノーベル物理学賞の発表がありました。予想通り「ヒッグス粒子」の存在を予想した2教授に与えられましたね。
　スウェーデン王立科学アカデミーは８日、２０１３年のノーベル物理学賞を、ベルギー・ブリュッセル自由大のフランソワ・アングレール名誉教授（８０）と、英エディンバラ大のピーター・ヒッグス名誉教授（８４）の２人に贈ると発表した。両氏は、物質に質量が存在する理由を説明する理論を提唱。ヒッグス氏はさらに、質量を与える役割を担う素粒子「ヒッグス粒子」の存在を予測した。授賞式は１２月１０日にストックホルムで開かれ、賞金８００万スウェーデンクローナ（約１億２１００万円）が贈られる。
　ヒッグス氏らの理論の根拠となったのは、０８年にノーベル物理学賞を受賞した南部陽一郎・米シカゴ大名誉教授（９２）＝米国籍＝が提唱した素粒子にかかわる理論。また、ヒッグス粒子の存在を裏付ける欧州合同原子核研究所（ＣＥＲＮ、本部＝スイス・ジュネーブ）の実験には、日本人研究者約１００人も参加したが、今回の受賞者に日本の関係者は含まれなかった。
　ヒッグス粒子は、現代物理学の基礎となる「標準理論」が予言する、すべての物質に質量を与える役割を担う素粒子。素粒子は自然界の最小単位で１７種類が予測され、そのうち１６種類は９８年までに確認されたが、ヒッグス粒子だけが見つかっていなかった。ＣＥＲＮの大型加速器「ＬＨＣ」で陽子同士を衝突させ、生じた粒子からヒッグス粒子を見つける実験を繰り返した結果、１２年にヒッグス粒子らしき新粒子の存在が確認された。１３年１０月には、この新粒子の性質も特定され、ヒッグス粒子の存在が確定した。
　実験を通じて存在が確定したことも受賞の追い風になりましたね。参加した日本人研究者は受賞の対象にはならなかったようですが、大きな発見に参画できたことだけで光栄ではないかと思います。
