目の表面を守る涙が減って視力低下を招くドライアイや、唾液が出にくくなり虫歯などを引き起こすドライマウスの根本治療につなげたい考え。ただ、人に応用する場合は、同様の細胞を人工多能性幹細胞(iPS細胞)で作製する必要がある。
チームは胎児から上皮細胞や間葉細胞を集め、体外で培養し涙腺と唾液腺になる細胞の塊を作製、涙腺や唾液腺のない大人のマウスに移植した。
30日後までに天然の組織と同じような構造ができ、機能も確認できた。
人間に実用化するまでには相当な時間がかかりそうですが実現するために更なる研究を進めてください。
