　京都大病院（京都市左京区）は１８日、重い糖尿病の５０代男性患者に対し、脳死者の膵島（すいとう）（ランゲルハンス島）を移植する手術を今月１３日に実施し、成功したと発表した。術後の経過も順調という。心停止者からの膵島移植は京大病院でこれまで１０人に実施されているが、脳死者からは国内で初めて。脳死移植の方が治療効果が高いとされる。
　京大病院によると、臓器提供者（ドナー）は北陸地方の６０代女性。患者は２２歳の時に体内でインスリンを全く分泌できない「１型糖尿病」を発症し、低血糖による発作を繰り返していた。
　膵島は膵臓の一部でインスリンを分泌する。膵臓から直径０．１〜０．５ミリの膵島組織を取り出し、総体積で約１０ミリリットルをカテーテル（管）を使って点滴の要領で肝臓の血管内に移植する。大がかりな手術は不要で、今回の手術も２７分間で終えた。移植した膵島からインスリンが分泌されたことも確認したという。
　インスリンを分泌する膵島って小さなものなんですね。そして点滴によって血管内に移植するというのもビックリですね。順調にインスリンが分泌されていることも確認されているようですから良かったですね。
