　オンタリオ州の町ウィンガムの出身。結婚後に図書館勤務や書店経営を経験しつつ執筆活動をはじめ、初の短篇集 Dance of the Happy Shades（1968年）がカナダの総督文学賞を受賞する。
その後もカナダの一地方を舞台とする作品を発表し続け、アメリカの雑誌「ニューヨーカー」にも作品が掲載され、国外での評価もすすむ。やがて全米批評家協会賞をはじめW・H・スミス賞、ペン・マラマッド賞、オー・ヘンリー賞など多くの文芸賞を受賞し、2005年には、「タイム」誌の「世界でもっとも影響力のある100人」に選ばれた。2009年に国際ブッカー賞を受賞。
大手ブックメーカー（公認の賭け屋）のラドブロークスなどによる予想では、有力候補として日本の人気作家、村上春樹氏、カナダのアリス・マンロー氏、米国のジョイス・キャロル・オーツ氏などの名前があがっていた。日本の村上春樹氏は受賞を逃した。残すは経済学賞と平和賞です。日本人の受賞は厳しそうですね。
