７０代で大学進学（College in their 70s）

諫早市の県立諫早高定時制に通う同市宗方町の主婦、久保さんが、同市の長崎ウエスレヤン大現代社会学部に社会人入試で合格した。７０代の高齢者が同定時制から大学進学するのも、同大に入学するのも初めて。「勉強はワクワク楽しくて仕方がない。社会福祉を学び、何か資格を取りたい」と来春からのキャンパス生活に夢を膨らませている。
　諫早小、中を卒業。高校進学を望んでいたが、時代は戦後の混乱期。両親ときょうだい８人の暮らしは貧しく、柱時計を質に入れ教科書を買ってもらうような生活。進学は断念せざるを得なかった。中３の進路面談で担任教師と向き合った時、涙が止まらなかった。
　すぐに働きに出て、洋裁の会社に６２歳まで勤務。５０代で夫を亡くして以降は一人暮らしだった。退職後は病気がちで入退院を繰り返していた。転機が訪れたのは６８歳の時。ある日、病院のベッドで天井ばかり見ていたらむなしくなり、ふとひらめいた。「このまま年を重ねては駄目だ。今から高校に行けるのだろうか」
　医師に「少し外出させてほしい」と告げ、その足で諫早高に電話。「単位って取れるのでしょうか」「一度授業参観に来てみませんか」－。そんなやりとりの後、入学が決まり、念願の高校生活が始まった。
　高校では４年間、無遅刻・無欠席の皆勤賞。得意科目は社会。試験で１００点を取ったことも。不得意科目はパソコンと体育。「キー操作はなかなか覚えられなくて。体育は見ているだけなんですよ。でもいいんです。先生が教えてくれることを一生懸命、頭でかみしめながら聞いている。それだけでうれしいんです」。通知表で１０教科のうち５教科で５段階評価の「５」を取ったことが自信となり大学進学の夢が芽生えた。
　ウエスレヤン大では社会福祉学科で学ぶことになる。手に染み込んだ洋裁の技術も生かしながら、福祉のボランティア活動をするのが夢だ。人間にとって学ぶという行為は、いつになっても重要であり、喜びにもつながっていくものなのかもしれませんね。ぜひ頑張って卒業し福祉のボランティア活動をしてください。
