町の鍛冶屋（The town blacksmith）

広島県安芸太田町は19日、全国公募した「町の鍛冶屋」に、広島市立大大学院で金属造形を学ぶ秋田さんを選んだと発表した。廃業した鍛冶業者の作業場を町が譲り受け、来春から無償で貸し出す。秋田さんは福山市出身。富山県内の大学を卒業して市立大大学院に進み、来春修了を予定する。作業場を拠点に創作に取り組み、鍛冶職人として生計を立てることを目指すという。　同町一帯は江戸時代にたたら製鉄が盛んで、昭和初期まで多くの鍛冶職人が活躍した。しかし産業構造の変化で職人は減少。最後の一人が引退したため、町は先月、職人を公募した。　秋田さんは「技術を高め、必要とされる職人になりたい。地域の鉄の文化についても学び情報を発信したい」と話している。鍛冶屋として自立していくことは大変そうですが、その地域固有の鉄の文化を背景に様々な試みを展開していって欲しいですね。
