地球温暖化の影響で、緑豊かな南米アマゾン川流域が今世紀末までに乾燥化する恐れがあるとの分析を、国立環境研究所（茨城県）のチームがまとめた。世界有数の熱帯雨林が広がる流域は、野生生物の貴重な生息地となり、二酸化炭素を大量に吸収する「地球の肺」の役割を果たしてきた。生態系の悪化や温暖化の加速が懸念されそうだ。
　国連の「気候変動に関する政府間パネル（ＩＰＣＣ）」は、各国の研究機関が開発した２０種類以上の計算方法を参考に、将来の気温や水資源量（降水量から蒸発量を除いた利用可能な水量）などを予測している。しかし、気温に比べ水資源量の予測は難しく、アマゾン川流域では湿潤になるという結果もあれば、減少して乾燥するという結果もあった。
　チームは、世界各地で観測された水資源量の地域分布と、これらの計算方法の結果を比較。最も現実に近い結果を算出する計算方法を選ぶ手法を開発し、アマゾン川流域に適用した。
　その結果、現在より気温が１度上昇すると、雨雲を発生させる大気の流れが変わって、水資源量は年１００ミリ以上増えるが、中下流では最大で年３００ミリ以上減る可能性のあることが分かった。今世紀末までにブラジルの気温は３度程度上昇するとのＩＰＣＣの予測をあてはめると、年間１０００ミリ近くの水資源量が減ることになる。
