ニュートンの手書き原稿ネットで公開（Newton's manuscript published in online）

英ケンブリッジ大学はこのほど、同大図書館が所蔵する英科学者アイザック・ニュートンの手書き原稿など４０００ページ分をオンラインで公開した。
ニュートンの学生時代のノートや、数学、光学、重力についての主要著書などが含まれている。万有引力の法則などをまとめた１６８７年の「自然哲学の数学的諸原理」（通称プリンキピア）の注釈付き原典も閲覧できる。
 同大の担当チームは１日約２００ページの資料を画像化し、アップロードする作業を続けてきた。デジタル化部門の責任者、グラント・ヤング氏は、このコレク ションについて「科学史上最も重要な文書の一部」と説明。「だれでも、どこからでも、ニュートンがどのように研究を進め、理論や実験を組み立てていたかを クリックひとつで見ることができるようになった」と強調した。
文書の一部には焼けたり濡れたりした跡もあり、収蔵前に丁寧な保存修復措置 が施されていた。公開された中には、ニュートンの死後の校閲で「出版に適さず」と書き込まれた原稿も含まれている。資料の解読を助けるため、英サセックス 大学ニュートン研究プロジェクトの講義録も同時に公開された。同大ではこのほかにも、「進化論」で知られるチャールズ・ダーウィンや絶対 温度の単位の由来となったケルビン卿、「核物理学の父」と呼ばれるアーネスト・ラザフォードらによる原稿のオンライン公開を計画中。余白に書き込みが詰 まったダーウィンの蔵書の一部は、すでに公開されている。
