電気通信関連事業を手がける東京ベイ通信（千葉市中央区）は、翻訳された英語や中国語の文章を音声化することで、外国語が話せなくても意思疎通ができるスマートフォン（高機能携帯電話）のレンタルサービスを１２日から始めた。
　新サービス「スマート通訳ポン」は、日本語と英語、日本語と中国語の２種類の通訳ができる音声通訳ソフトをスマホに搭載。スマホに向かって日本語で話すと、ソフトがその日本語の文章を認識して、外国語の文章に翻訳。それを音声変換する仕組みだ。
　レンタル利用料は１日１３００円で、サーバーを介さないため、砂漠や海上など電波が届かないところでも使える。旅先での日常会話に支障がない数万語の日 本語と外国語が内蔵されており、同社の安藤社長は、「海外に行く日本人だけでなく、日本にきた外国人観光客が国内で利用することも想定している」と自信をみせる。

　年内は成田空港でのレンタルに限定するが、来年１月には関西国際空港でもサービスを広げる計画だ。ビジネス等で外国語を駆使して世界を駆け回る人は別として普通の人は語学を習うことも必要なくなるのかもしれませんね。
