ギャップイヤー（Gap year）

入学前や在学中の学生に学外での社会体験やボランティア活動で人間修業をしてもらおうという大学の動きが始まっている。

　東京大が秋季入学への移行を検討し始めたことで、欧米で定着している「ギャップイヤー」に関心が集まったことが一因だ。国際社会で通用する人材育成につながると、政府や財界も後押ししている。
　東大は、入試時期は現在のまま、入学時期を欧米と同じ９～１０月頃に移すことを検討しているが、この半年間に短期留学やボランティア活動などで経 験を積ませる構想を持っている。浜田純一学長は「受験勉強の延長ではなく、学問の社会的な意味や、問題意識を学んでから大学に来てもらいたい」としてい る。
　こうした社会体験を入学前に積ませる草分けは国際教養大（秋田市）。２００８年度から、入学予定者が９月の入学まで社会活動に取り組む特別枠の入 試を導入している。学生はカンボジアでの地雷撤去、豪州の幼稚園で就業体験、国内での農業体験など多様なプランを自力で見つけてきたという。来年９月の入学者は、定員１０人に４６人が応募した。良い試みのように感じますね。多くの大学で試みられ、それが定着していくことを期待したいですね。
