日本人は英語が苦手といわれる。英語力の判定テスト「ＴＯＥＦＬ」の平均得点で比較すると、日本はアジアで最下位グループだ。日本は受験者の幅が広いため、一部エリート層のみが受験する国との単純比較は難しい。それでも英語が得意と胸を張れる水準ではないのも事実だ。

　もちろん全ての人に英語が必要なわけではない。だが、経済のグローバル化を背景に企業活動の舞台は広がっている。社内外を問わず、外国人と交渉する機会は確実に増えている。ビジネスの世界で事実上の共通言語となった英語を無視することはできない。
