東日本大震災の津波に耐え、復興のシンボルとなっていた陸前高田市の「奇跡の一本松」について、住友林業グループは１４日、松かさから採取した種子を１８本の苗に育てることに成功したと発表、東京都内で苗を公開した。これまで接ぎ木による苗の育成は行われているが、種子を直接苗に育てることに成功し たのは初めて。高田松原の約７万本のうち唯一残った一本松は、枯死が避けられない状態となっている。
　住友林業筑波研究所（茨城県）は４月、一本松の種子を回収。約半年間低温で保管し、９月から１２月にかけて発芽させることに成功した。現在は高さ ２～４センチに成長している。３０～５０センチになって現地に植え替えできるようになるには、接ぎ木による苗で５～６年、種子から育てた場合は約１０年かかるという。
　同研究所の中村主席研究員は「小さくて弱い光かもしれないが、あれだけの津波に耐えた一本松から生まれた苗だから、陸前高田の復興に一役買ってくれるのでは」と期待を込めた。
