さらなる検証実験（Further verification experiment）

スイスにある欧州合同原子核研究機関（ＣＥＲＮ）の国際共同研究グループＯＰＥＲＡが昨年９月、素粒子ニュートリノが光より速く飛んだとする実験結果を公表し科学界に衝撃を与えた問題で、イタリアのグランサッソ研究所は１６日、ＣＥＲＮとの間の検証実験でニュートリノは光速を超えなかったと発表した。
ＣＥＲＮは先月、時間計測に使った光ファイバーケーブルに緩みがあったなどの欠陥が見付かったとも発表しており、光速を超えたとする当初の実験結果は間違いだったとの見方がさらに強まりそうだ。
ＣＥＲＮによると、９月の実験結果の「最終的な検証」のためグランサッソ研究所で今年５月、計４回の実験を実施する。
ＯＰＥＲＡ は昨年９月、１万５０００個以上のニュートリノを使い、ジュネーブ郊外にあるＣＥＲＮと約７３０キロ離れたグランサッソ研究所の間の地中で粒子加速器を用 いて実験。ニュートリノの飛距離と時間などを１０億分の１秒単位まで厳密に計算し、光より速かったと発表していた。
昨年１１月には再実験を行い、同一の結果が得られたともしていた。９月の実験結果を受け、科学界で疑問が出たことなどを踏まえたもので、実験装置を徹底的に点検したほか、速度測定に工夫を加えるなどしていた。
こ れらの実験結果が事実なら、光より速いものはないとするアインシュタインの相対性理論を覆す大発見で、現代物理学の根底を揺るがす可能性が指摘されてい た。ただ、ＯＰＥＲＡは実験結果の正しさの最終証明には中立的立場の科学者の異なった装置による立証が必要と指摘し、他の研究所などに同様の実験を促して いる。さらなる検証実験が必要な様子ですね。考えられない短い時間の中での出来事の計測ですから何が起こっても不思議はないでしょうね。
