女性の世紀（Motte）

ノーベル平和賞受賞が決まった西アフリカ・リベリアのエレン・サーリーフ大統領と女性平和運動家レイマ・ボウィさんは、長期内戦に苦しむ女性を結集し、混乱を極めた祖国の和平と再建に尽力した。
　サーリーフ氏は２００６年、アフリカ初の女性民選大統領に就任。女子教育の充実など改革に取り組んできた。識字率は向上し、国内総生産（ＧＤＰ）は就任時の１・３倍に増加、国民の平均寿命も２・５歳延び、５５・４７歳（０９年）となった。
　米ハーバード大大学院で修士号（行政学）を取得した国際派エリート。時の政権との対立で２度も亡命に追い込まれながら、政治活動をあきらめず、「鉄の女」と呼ばれる。そんな「サーリーフ改革」が前進するのは、ボウィさんら一般女性の後押しがあるためだ。
　０３年まで１４年に及んだ内戦では、人口の１割弱にあたる推定２７万人が死亡した。多くの女性が夫や子を失い、性暴力の標的にもなった。
　子供の手を引いて戦火を逃れた経験もあるボウィさんは０２年、知人に呼びかけて反戦運動を開始した。「私たちの国に必要なのは平和」。そう書いたボードを手に、雨でも酷暑でも「銃弾よりまし」と独裁者テーラー大統領（当時）の官邸付近で抗議デモを展開。十数人だった参加者はやがて数千人に膨れ上がり、平和を求める世論を盛り上げた。それが、内戦後初の大統領選でサーリーフ氏を勝たせる原動力になった。

　男性が織りなしてきた歴史は闘争の歴史だったのかもしれません。21世紀の今、女性の母性や優しさが、その闘争の歴史に幕を引き、平和な世界になることを願って止みません。女性の皆さんが先頭に立ってすべてを進める世紀なのかもしれませんね。
