小数点以下１０兆桁まで計算（Computation of 10 trillion digits after the decimal point）

長野県飯田市の会社員、近藤さんが１６日、自宅のパソコンで円周率を小数点以下１０兆桁まで計算し、昨年８月に自ら立てたギネス世界記録の同５兆桁を更新した。
　４８テラバイトのハードディスク（ＨＤＤ）を搭載した自作パソコンで、昨年１０月に計算を開始。ＨＤＤの故障や停電で約１０回も中断し、２日間再開できないこともあった。東日本大震災の影響で計画停電がうわさされたときは自家発電を覚悟した。
　パソコンの熱で４０度近くに上昇する部屋で、奥さんは「洗濯物を室内に干すと早く乾いて助かったけど、電気代が月３万円もかかるのはつらかった」と苦笑いした。
　「頭の片隅から円周率が離れない日は、もう終わった」とほっとした様子の近藤さん。ギネス申請手続きには千ユーロ（約１１万円）かかるため、今回の記録をどうするか夫婦で相談中だ。倍の２０兆桁に挑戦するつもりだが「少し休憩だな」と笑った。自作のパソコンで達成したというところに意味があるんでしょうね。ちょうど1年ほどかかって10兆桁を到達したということになりますが、まさに円周率に命をかけている感じですね。ぜひ、20兆桁を目指して欲しいですね。
