全世界の民間人から選抜された総勢25名の“宇宙飛行士”たちが、2014年に宇宙飛行を行う。
　宇宙旅行のパッケージがツアー会社から販売されるようになった昨今、昔よりは宇宙が身近になったとはいえ、まだまだ高額な宇宙旅行は、一般人にとっては夢の話。しかしそんな中、民間人が宇宙飛行士として飛び立つという夢が実現しようとしている。
　ユニリーバ・ジャパンが展開する男性用化粧品ブランド「AXE（アックス）」が全世界で開催した「AXE 宇宙飛行士選抜キャンペーン」において選抜された25名の中には、日本人の名前もある。現役の高校教師である32歳の米谷貴信さんだ。
　千葉県の公立高校で主に物理を中心に教えているという米谷さん。小学生のころから宇宙に興味をもち、大学・大学院では、宇宙物理を研究していたそうで、今回、「生徒たちに、夢を持ち続けることの大切さを伝えたかった」との思いから応募したという。応募から面接選考、さらにアメリカ・フロリダ州で行われた3日間の宇宙飛行士選抜トレーニング「Global Space Camp」による最終選考を経て、見事、“宇宙飛行士ニッポン代表”として宇宙旅行への切符を手に入れた。
　念願の宇宙旅行のチャンスを手に入れた米谷さんは、「嬉しいです。誰が勝ってもおかしくないほど、レベルが高かった」と喜ぶとともに、宇宙飛行に向け、「以前、宇宙空間でニッパーが変な回り方をする映像を見て、気になっていたので、実際どうなるのか、自分の目で見てみたいと思います」と抱負を語った。
　米谷さんら25名は、これからさらに宇宙飛行士トレーニングを受け、2014年後半（予定）に、 X COR テクノロジー社が開発するサブオービダル宇宙船「Lynx」で、約50分間の宇宙飛行を体験する予定だ。ぜひ、夢の実現に向けて様々なトレーニングをクリヤーして宇宙飛行につなげて欲しいですね。
