米国 3D Systems は、同社が展開する家庭用 3D プリンタ「Cube」シリーズにおいて、第3世代モデルとなる「Cube 3」を発表した。印刷速度が大幅にアップし、層厚75ミクロンの高解像度を実現したほか、同時に2種類の素材と2色までの出力に対応しながらも価格は1,000ドルを下回るという。
プリンタ本体にはタッチスクリーンを搭載し、誰でも手軽に使える直感的なインターフェイスを実現。子どもも安全に使用できるよう家庭用プリンタの安全基準として IEC 規格を満たしているとのこと。素材は ABS/PLA 樹脂プラスチックの2種類を同時に使用可能。それぞれ20色以上が用意されている。自動レベル調整パッドを備え、プリンタはカートリッジから自動的に素材を検出するため、印刷設定の手間も簡略化できるそうだ。
また、無線 LAN および Bluetooth を利用し、同社の 3D モデリングアプリケーション「Cubify」（iOS/Android/Windows に対応）と連携してスマートフォンなどから直接印刷指示ができるという。
同社は、2014年第2四半期中に Cube 3 の出荷を開始する予定。なお、1月7日から10日にかけてラスベガスで開催される Consumer Electronics Show 2014（CES 2014）で製品を展示する。
