November last year , the Japan Coast Guard confirmed for the first time the Niijima that could be in the vicinity southeast of Nishinoshima . Land area has expanded gradually in the lava spewing from the crater , it was connected to the south bank of Nishinoshima the end of December . As a result of observation aircraft to January 20 , land of Niijima part increases to approximately 30 hectares , and this has been also about 1.5 times of the original Nishinoshima .
According to the JCG , Nishinoshima spread the area in the direction of the south and east and west . There are islands of Ogasawara to the south and east , but because there is no island to the west , expected to the outer edge of the EEZ is spread to the west slightly . 小笠原諸島（東京）の西之島が火山活動で出現した「新島」と完全に一体化し、面積が約２・５倍に拡大していることが２３日、分かった。これにより、西之島の西側の排他的経済水域（ＥＥＺ）がわずかに広がる可能性が出てきた。
　海上保安庁は昨年１１月、西之島の南東付近にできた新島を初めて確認。火口から噴き出した溶岩で陸地部分が徐々に拡大し、１２月末には西之島の南岸とつながった。１月２０日に航空機で観測したところ、新島部分の陸地は約３０ヘクタールにまで大きくなり、もともとの西之島の約１・５倍にもなっていた。
　海保によると、西之島は東西と南の方向に面積を広げた。東と南には小笠原の島々があるが、西には島がないため、ＥＥＺの外縁がわずかに西側へ広がる見通し。火山活動が終息してから正確に測量し、海図を書き直す方針。良いんじゃないでしょうかね。
