北海道むかわ町で、恐竜が絶滅する直前の時期である白亜紀末（７２００万年前）の地層から、草食恐竜の右脚の化石がほぼ完全な形で見つかったと、北海道大学総合博物館（札幌市）の小林准教授と、同町立穂別博物館が１７日、発表した。

　同町穂別の山林で２００３年、地元収集家が尾椎骨の化石を発見した。これが７２００万年前のハドロサウルス科の恐竜の化石とわかった。小林准教授らが昨年９、１０月、本格的に発掘作業を進め、右脚を含む腰から後ろの骨格の大部分や歯の化石を発見した。全身の骨格が発掘されるといいですね。
