香りが過去の記憶をよみがえらせる「プルースト現象」と呼ばれる体験によって、快感や自分の体験の記憶に関わる脳の働きが活性化し、健康状態も改善するとの検証結果を、花王感性科学研究所(東京)や愛知医科大などの研究グループがまとめた。
8日、徳島市で始まった日本ストレス学会で発表された。
男女計10人(20~35歳)に自分の肯定的な体験を思い出し、プルースト現象につながる市販の香水と、具体的な記憶と結びつかない未発売の香水をそれぞれ2分間嗅いでもらい、PET(陽電子放射断層撮影)で、脳の状態を比較した。
「プルースト現象」を起こす香りでは、快感などを判断する「前頭眼窩(がんか)野」と呼ばれる大脳の前部や、自己記憶に関わる「後部帯状回」と呼ばれる大脳の内側が同時に活性化した。炎症を起こす体内物質が血中で減少、体の状態を良くすることも確認した。
プルースト現象を起こす香りを嗅ぐと、「出勤前のお父さん」「果物を食べた夏休み」「友達との買い物」などを思い出し、「快さ」や「懐かしさ」の感情が強くなっていた。未発売の香水では、こうした効果は見られなかった。
確かに香りに対する記憶が残っていて、その香りを嗅ぐと、その場面を思い出して心地よいという体験はありますね。
