天皇、皇后両陛下の「ご喪儀」の在り方を検討していた宮内庁は１４日、葬法を火葬とすると発表した。天皇の葬法は江戸時代初期から土葬で、火葬への転換は約３６０年ぶり。両陛下の墓所にあたる「陵」については、一つの陵への「合葬」ではなく、隣り合わせにして一体的に造成することで従来より規模を縮小する。いずれも両陛下による簡素化の意向を踏まえた。
　ご喪儀を巡っては、羽毛田長官（当時）が昨年４月の記者会見で「火葬が一般化しており、火葬なら陵の規模や形式も弾力的に検討できる」との両陛下の意向を公表。大正以降の天皇、皇后（皇太后）の陵がある東京都八王子市の武蔵陵墓地の用地に制約があることもあり、見直しを進めてきた。
