　秀吉の姉の子である秀次は天正１９（１５９１）年、実子のいない秀吉の養子となり、関白を引き継いだ。しかし秀頼誕生から２年足らずの文禄４（１５９５）年７月に失脚。高野山へ追放され、同月１５日、金剛峯寺の前身である青巌寺で切腹した。
　切腹に至る詳しい事情を物語る同時代の史料はないが、儒学者、小瀬甫庵が江戸時代初期に記した太閤記は「切腹命令」という文書を掲載。文書には石田三成ら五奉行が署名し、７月１３日の日付がある。
