京都大iPS細胞研究所長の山中伸弥教授は27日、iPS細胞を使った難病の治療薬づくりを加速させるため、難病を研究する全国の医師らとネットワークをつくると明らかにした。来年度に完成する新研究棟を拠点に活動を本格化させる。
iPS細胞は、目的の組織などに変化させて移植する再生医療のほか、患者の細胞をもとに薬の候補を探す創薬にも使える。治療法がない難病は数百種類あるとされるが、iPS細胞を使った創薬の研究は欧米より遅れているという。
そこで、全国の難病研究者が京大に滞在してiPS細胞を扱う技術を学べるようにする。国の研究費に加え、患者や市民らから募った研究基金も活用する。山中さんは「再生医療に比べ、iPS創薬はあまり進んでいない。全国の先生たちと研究を強力に進め、難病の患者さんたちに成果を届けたい」と話す。創薬でも再生医療でも早く何らかの実績を出して欲しいですね。同時に死に対する認識を改めて考えなければならないでしょうね。死なせない医学から死の価値に基づく医学が必要なのかもしれませんね。
