倉敷科学センター（岡山県）の三島学芸員が２日早朝、水星が月に隠される「水星食」を撮影し、月の裏側から水星が姿を現す様子を捉えた。
　水星食は、水星と月、地球が並んだ時に起こる現象。水星は最も太陽に近い惑星で、地球からは常に太陽の近くに見え、明るすぎるために食の観測は難しい。今回は、食が薄暗い時間帯に起きたため、観測できた。国内で条件良く観測できたのは平成２１年２月以来だという。
　三島さんは「細い月の裏側から水星が出てくる瞬間が大変美しかった」と話した。次回の水星食は２７年６月だが、昼間に起こるため観測は難しそうだ。様々な要因が良い方向に働いて観測できたようですね。
