熊本県は２９日、「世界大学ランキング５０位」内の海外難関大に留学する県内の高校生らに各１００万円を助成すると発表した。若者の夢を支援するのが狙いで、文部科学省によると、異例の取り組みという。

　助成対象は来秋以降に留学する県内の高校生のほか２１歳以下の浪人生。今夏に申請の受け付けを始め、英語検定試験「ＴＯＥＦＬ」の得点や高校の成績で選考し、大学に推薦状を出して合格すれば助成する。

発案したのは蒲島知事。自身が農協職員から米国の大学へ進み、東大教授を経て政治家になった異色の経歴を持っている。「世界大学ランキング５０位」内の大学とは、かなり基準が高いですね。でも挑戦する学生が現れることを期待したいですね。
