チームは「逆に、世界には７千年間は先があると考えていたようだ」としている。カレンダーは日食の時期を予想するなど、天文に関する高度な知識がうかがえる。成果は11日付の米科学誌サイエンスに発表された。

チームは2010～11年、グアテマラ北部の遺跡を調査。寺院の住居部分とみられる小部屋の内壁や天井に、青やオレンジ色の衣装で着飾った王族の姿や、点と線、円を組み合わせた数百個の象形文字が描かれていた。

解読したところ、文字は数字を表しており日食、月食の時期や月の満ち欠けなどを示していた。このほか金星や火星について、太陽、地球と一直線に並ぶ現象が起きるタイミングを計算した結果もあった。ただ月食や日食についての計算は不正確なところもあった。

これまで見つかっていたマヤの暦は樹皮の紙に書かれた13～14世紀のもの。暦にみられるサイクルから、ことし12月にこの世が終わると解釈する人もいるという。

チームは「神秘的な宗教儀式を、天体の動きと合わせるためにカレンダーを使っていたのだろう」としている。
エジプト文明やインカ文明などでも天体観測が行われていたり、日本でも藤原定家の明月記などにも空を眺めた記録が残っていますが、改めてマヤ文明の天体観測の質の高さを感じますね。
世界は終わらないでしょうが、このような状態が続けば世界は崩壊していくでしょうから大きな精神的・意識的変革が起きなければ、存続も難しいでしょうね。
