天皇、皇后両陛下は１６日午後（日本時間同日深夜）、政府専用機でロンドンのヒースロー空港に到着された。エリザベス女王の在位６０年を記念した午餐（昼食）会などの行事出席を目的とする公式訪問で、滞在中は主にロンドンで過ごし、２０日に帰国される。陛下は２月１８日の心臓手術から約３カ月での海外訪問となられた。
到着後しばらくは８時間の時差を考慮して、静かに過ごされる。１８日にはロンドン郊外のウィンザー城で開かれる女王夫妻主催の午餐会と、ロンドンのバッキンガム宮殿でのチャールズ皇太子夫妻主催の晩餐会にご出席。女王や各国の王族らと親交を深められる。
宮内庁によると、陛下の英国ご訪問は皇太子時代を含めて８回目。両陛下で海外を訪問されるのは、平成２１年７月のカナダ、米ハワイ以来約３年ぶりとなる。術後３ヵ月ほどでの海外訪問ですね。震災に際して差し伸べられた思いにもお応えしたいという気持ちもあることでしょうね。順調にご回復なされておられる証でもあるでしょうが、お体には十分留意されて各国の王族方との親交を深めていただきたいものです。無事の帰国をお祈りいたします。
