自宅でみとられた患者の約４割が、亡くなる前、すでにいない親の姿を見たと語るなど、いわゆる「お迎え」体験を持ち、それが穏やかなみとりにつながっているとの調査研究を、宮城県などで在宅医療を行っている医師らのグループがまとめた。
在宅診療を行う医師や大学研究者らが２０１１年、宮城県５か所と福島県１か所の診療所による訪問診療などで家族をみとった遺族１１９１人にアンケートした。
「患者が、他人には見えない人の存在や風景について語った。あるいは、見えている、聞こえている、感じているようだった」かを尋ねた。回答者５４１人のうち、２２６人（４２％）が「経験した」と答えた。患者が見聞きしたと語った内容は、親など「すでに死去していた人物」（５１％）が最も多かった。その場にいないはずの人や仏、光などの答えもあった。
「お迎え」を体験した後、患者は死に対する不安が和らぐように見える場合が多く、本人にとって「良かった」との肯定的評価が４７％と、否定的評価１９％を上回った。
調査は、文部科学省の研究助成金を得て実施。「お迎え」体験は経験的にはよく語られるが、学術的な報告はきわめて珍しい。
人間は漠然と死に対する恐怖を抱いています。しかし、死後の世界が明確に存在し、そこで生活するようになることが分かったなら 死に対する恐怖は少なくなるのかもしれません。
我々は、夫婦（父母）の愛に中から誕生していきます。そして母の胎内で生活し五体が整えられて、この世に具体的に誕生します。その時、狭い産道を抜けて出てきますから死を経験するようなものです。そして父母から愛され、兄弟から愛され、親族や様々な方から愛され、次第に愛することを知り、一人の伴侶を愛し、子をなし、子を愛し成長させ、結婚させ孫を愛して死を迎える。
死後の世界は、愛を中心とした世界であるとも言われます。愛を完成させて逝った人にとって最高の世界です。結局、この世は母の胎内同様、次のステップへの準備期間です。肉体の殻を脱いで新しい世界に誕生する喜びの瞬間であるということが科学的に明確に示された時、死に対する恐怖が消え去り、同時に全ての価値観は大きく変わっていくことでしょう。早く、あの世が明確に科学的に証明されることを期待したいですね。
