米国の非営利組織、モジラ財団は23日、自らの基本ソフト（ＯＳ）「ファイヤーフォックス」を使うことで、現在の標準的な低価格機種の約４分の１の25ドル（約2500円）という激安スマートフォン（スマホ）が登場するとの見通しを明らかにした。成熟化が進むスマホ市場で価格下落傾向はさらに加速しそうだ。
モジラ財団は世界最大の携帯電話見本市「モバイル・ワールド・コングレス（ＭＷＣ）」が24日に開幕するのに合わせて記者会見を開いた。
　モジラのファイヤーフォックスを搭載した激安スマホ向けには、中国の半導体メーカー、展訊通信（スプレッドトラム）が低価格の半導体を開発する。通信会社が顧客獲得の武器として激安スマホの販売に乗り出せば、ＯＳの普及拡大につながりそうだ。
　ファイヤーフォックス搭載スマホは2014年中に新興国を中心に販売先が前年比８割増の27カ国となる。
　これに合わせ、楽天やリクルートホールディングスは、ファイヤーフォックスＯＳ向けのアプリ（応用ソフト）を開発する方針を表明した。　日本でも発売されるようになるんでしょうかね。
