　国内順位ではトップの東京大が世界では１２年発表の１６位から１７位となり、３年連続で順位を落とした。科学技術振興機構を除いて国内トップ１０は１２年発表に比べて、軒並み世界順位を下げており、日本の研究競争力の低下が示唆される結果となった。世界１位は米ハーバード大だった。
　論文の内容が画期的で重要なものほど、ほかの研究者の論文に引用される回数が増える傾向にある。このため、所属する研究者の論文引用回数は、大学や研究機関の研究競争力を示す指標とされている。
　国内２位は京都大で世界３５位（１２年３４位）、３位は大阪大で世界４７位（１２年４４位）だった。分野別では、材料科学分野で１１年連続で国内首位、世界でもトップ３に入っていた東北大が、物質・材料研究機構に抜かれ国内２位、世界６位となった。低下を食い止め上昇に持っていくには相当な時間と投入が必要ですね。その意味でも教育が大切ですね。
