世界中の人々を結びつけたい。そんな思いを込めた筑波大学の小型人工衛星「結(ゆい)」（愛称）が、今年度打ち上げられる。
　手のひらサイズの人工衛星が、宇宙から発信する簡易データは、世界中で受信でき、同大は受信データを活用して何ができるか、アイデアの一般公募を始めた。
　プロジェクトを進めるのは、同大システム情報系の亀田准教授と学生約２０人。宇宙航空研究開発機構（ＪＡＸＡ）が、教育・研究目的を条件として募集した打ち上げ事業で採択されたもので、同大としては初の人工衛星となる。
　結の正式名称は、同大のスローガン「ＩＭＡＧＩＮＥ　ＴＨＥ　ＦＵＴＵＲＥ」の頭文字から名付けた「ＩＴＦ―１」。衛星の大きさは１辺１０センチ・メートルの立方体で重さ約１・５キロ、四つの面には太陽電池が張り付けられる。現在は、打ち上げの衝撃でも故障しないよう耐久性を高めることをテーマに開発が進められている。
　小型衛星のため機能は限られ、宇宙でできることはバッテリー電圧や衛星内部温度などのデータ発信だけだ。だが、発せられる信号は小型トランシーバーと自作できるアンテナで受信できるため、誰でも受信できるのが特長。専用サイトに信号を入力してもらうことで、世界中から受信報告を集約できる。
　募集するのはスマートフォン（高機能携帯電話）などで動作するソフト（アプリ）のアイデア。「データ入力地点、衛星内温度、バッテリー電圧」の受信報告データは、インターネットを通じ筑波大のコンピューターに集められ、これらのデータを利用するアプリは、「今まさにデータ報告をしている人同士を結びつける」「データ送信時にメッセージを加えるようにしてそれを利用する」など様々な仕組みが考えられそうだ。
応募アイデアに細かい設計は不要で、世界各地の人たちのコミュニケーションを促すことなどが条件。中学生以上が応募できる。応援キャラクターのデザインも募集する。
　亀田准教授は「人工衛星の開発を通じ学生が成長でき、将来宇宙で本格的な実験を行うための技術を蓄積できる。アプリは様々な切り口で自由に考えてほしい」と話している。締め切りは６月３０日。おもしろいアイデアがあれば、どんどん応募してみたらいかがでしょう。
