日米のチームが、中米グアテマラにある「セイバル遺跡」で、約３千年前の紀元前１０００年ごろに造られたマヤ文明最古の建造物を見つけたと、２６日付の米科学誌サイエンスに発表した。マヤ文明の起源に迫る成果。
　チームは２００５～１２年にかけ発掘調査を実施。地表面から１０メートルほど下で、地盤の上に築かれた高さ２メートルほどの土の舞台を発見した。祭祀に使われたとみられる。地層に含まれる木片を、放射性炭素の年代測定法で調べると、紀元前１０００年ごろに建設されたことが分かった。
　チームの青山・茨城大教授は「人類史を考える上でも重要な成果だ」と話している。さらに研究を重ねて起源を明らかにしてほしいですね。
