山口大と東京大、愛媛大の研究グループは２日、光学レンズなどに用いられるレアアースの一種「ランタン」を含む新種の鉱物を三重県伊勢市の山中から発見したと発表した。ただ、量は少なく、現状では資源としての利用は期待できないという。
　研究グループによると、鉱物が発見されたのは、海底の堆積物がプレートの移動により地表に上がってきた地質で、関東から九州に広がる「秩父帯」と呼ばれる。
　この地質を詳しく調べたところ、ランタンとレアメタル（希少金属）のバナジウムを含む褐簾石という新種の鉱物を発見。国際鉱物学連合に申請し、「ランタンバナジウム褐簾石」として承認されたという。
　今回の地質は、小笠原諸島・南鳥島沖で発見されたレアアースを含む泥の数億年後の姿に相当すると考えられるという。研究グループは「秩父帯には、まだレアアース鉱物が眠っている可能性がある」としている。資源として利用できる量が発見されることを期待したいですね。
