宇宙旅行を計画している英ヴァージン・グループのヴァージン・ギャラクティック社は２９日、米カリフォルニア州で旅行用宇宙船「スペースシップ２」の、エンジンを使った初の飛行試験に成功したと発表した。
　テストパイロット２人が搭乗した宇宙船は、同州の飛行場から母機の飛行機につり下げられて離陸。上空約１万４０００メートルで母機から切り離され、エンジンを１６秒間噴射、約１万７０００メートルまで上昇した。宇宙船は約１０分間の飛行後、無事に飛行場に着陸した。
　同社は今後も試験飛行を重ね、今年末ごろには商業飛行開始のめどをつけたいという。我々庶民が宇宙旅行を楽しむには、まだまだ時間が必要でしょうが、近い将来「宇宙旅行」が当たり前の時代になるのかもしれませんね。
