　海洋政策に詳しい東海大の山田教授は「桟橋を造ることは日本として経済活動を行うことの証となり、ＥＥＺの設定根拠となる島であることを明確にできる。日本の海洋権益を守る上で非常に重要であり、シンボルでもある」と指摘する。その上で、事故による工期の遅れに懸念を示し「沖ノ鳥島の管理態勢確立の遅れにつながり、中国などから横やりが入る恐れがある」と話した。
