「日本最古の企業」ともいわれる社寺建築「金剛組」（大阪市天王寺区）が、異例の当主不在に陥っている。記録が残る過去４００年で初の事態という。聖徳太子の命で四天王寺を建立して以来という伝統をどう守るか、模索が続く。
　宮大工たちが１年の安全を祈る神事「手斧（ちょんな）始め」（大阪市無形民俗文化財）が四天王寺で挙行された今年１月１１日、異変があった。「四天王寺正大工」の称号を持つ金剛家当主の姿が、なかったのだ。
　金剛組によると、１千年を超える昔から、当主が式を毎年取り仕切ってきたとされる。ところが昨年１０月２８日、３９代目金剛利隆さんが後継者不在のまま８９歳で死去してしまった。
