　同研究所の荒井研究グループ長らは今年７月２０～３０日、石油天然ガス・金属鉱物資源機構（ＪＯＧＭＥＣ）の調査船「白嶺」で徳之島周辺の音波探査を実施。直径約５００メートルの火口状の地形を発見した。
　無人潜水艇のカメラを使って観察したところ、火口の中や周囲の複数の噴出孔から熱水がゆらゆらと立ち上がる様子や、シンカイヒバリガイなどの噴出孔特有の生物が確認できた。大きな鉱床が見つかることを期待したいですね。
